Nags – Accepting the ME

I’ve suffered from a negative body image all my life. I was a tall and chubby girl through childhood and adolescence and generally stood out in crowds growing up due to my height and large frame. I used to have a pronounced stoop (and still do sometimes) due to being top-heavy and it was often seen as a bad thing in my family. My hair is curly (bad!), I was duskier than average (bad, obviously), and although my immediate family definitely thought I was pretty enough, I didn’t agree

I was able to shake the skin colour issues and the stoop a lot earlier but body image is still a work in progress

It took me 38 years, a husband who has constantly told me “ nobody cares, just do what you want” when I feel self conscious, and a daughter who I’m petrified of passing these onto to, to truly start being comfortable in my own skin

It’s still a journey but I realise, my daughter doesn’t care if my tummy jiggles or my arms are fat or how I look in a swimsuit. She looks at how happy I am in the pool with her, she cares about my smile, my confidence, my willingness to jump right in. She cares about ME, her Amma ❤️

So if you choose to sit by the side or on the sand and choose to not step out of your comfort zone because of how you look or feel in a swim suit – I hope you’ll reconsider. Life is too short. Jump in, make memories ❤️

Nagalakshmi, or Nags as she’s more popularly known, has lived in India and Australia before settling down in sunny Singapore with her husband and 21-month old daughter. She’s a sales enablement executive at Twitter and has been blogging about food for over 14 years, even before it became a cool thing to do. You can usually find her cooking up dishes with an Indian twist or pottering around her mini edible balcony garden.
